New Line Cinema and MGM Studios have announced today that they have reached an agreement with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh to executive produce a film version of 'The Hobbit'. A director has yet to be named, but it has been confirmed that there will be two films, shot simultaneously: 'The Hobbit' and a sequel; filming is expected to begin in 2009, with the films slated to be released in 2010 and 2011!! ;D ;D Click here to find out more

DARN YOU!!! I saw the same article and was about to post it!!!!!!! *sigh* Oh well. But what a breakthrough it's been. Just weeks ago it seemed an impossible thing that PJ would be involved in The Hobbit at all, now he'll be producing it! They better get a good director. And when I say good, I mean the same as or better (I use that term loosly because "better" than Peter Jackson doesn't exist) than PJ. Wow. Talk about a lot of pressure for New Line to find someone of that caliber. Glad that's not my responsibility.

I'm just glad that even though PJ's not directing, at least he and Fran have a huge part in it, are producing it, and have at least some control over who directs it ;D

Exactly. And I was thinking yesterday about how 2010 is so far away. But in reality it's practically right around the corner! 2010 sounds like the Jetsons. lol Oh God I just had a thought...in re-reading that article, it says that they want production to start immediately. Like next year. It didn't really sink in until just now... Do you remember how long it took the trilogy to be created? Several years. John Howe and the other conceptual artists were working on exactly how Middle-earth, it's inhabitants, and everything else should look for YEARS. How can anyone finish making the first installment of 'The Hobbit' and do it well? I bloody well remember what happened to the book 'Eragon'!!! The author created a fantastic work, and Hollywood BUTCHERED it, partly because all the director cared about was making money off of a top selling children's book. But also because he didn't possess the same respect for the work as Peter Jackson holds for Lord of the Rings. Although Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will have a major part in production, they still won't hold all the cards for EXACTLY what is protrayed in 'The Hobbit' movie. I'm suddenly feeling very uneasy about this. If you ask me, I think that I'd rather wait until the first movie was released in 2011 or 2012 if it meant that we'd be getting a better quality film. The Lord of the Rings movies changed my life in ways I never thought a movie could, and I don't want a book as popular and beloved to be unworthy of joining the trilogy in making film history.

I typed more in my last post while you were posting lol. Just so you know. And the Jetsons are just no longer realistic lol. 2004 was almost 4 years ago and we STILL don't have the technology that they did in "their time."

Mm, yeah I've thought about all of those too. The way I figure it, PJ's still good friends with all the people who worked on LotR, so all of the old crew would probablly come back. As for conseptional art, well Howe and the other dude who's name I forget have already done pictures from the hobbit I believe, and pre-existing art was used when creating the looks for the original trillogy. I'm tryyyyyying to be optomistic, it just may get hard, lol

I know, and you're right about all that. I'll try to stay optomistic about it too, that way I don't ruin your optomism lol. I REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY hope that Weta will be creating the special effects. If they aren't we can just kiss 'The Hobbit' good-bye...

I recommend also checking out this website: www.thehobbitblog.com/It's The Hobbit's Official Movie Blog. I haven't checked it out yet (just found it, but now I need to get off the computer! ), but of what I can tell, this would be a great place to get up-to-date updates on the making of the movies.

I have no way of knowing if "official" really means official. I wish lol. I'll keep checking it to determine for myself, because sometimes with those fan sites they like to exaggerate things just so they feel good. And of course, besides the regular sites that have proven themselves many times over to be reliable, there's always the LORD of all sites: www.lordoftherings.net ;D

Wow...one step closer! Wouldn't it be awesome if the next article we read is New Line announcing the director of The Hobbit to be Peter Jackson??? I know it sounds like a long shot, but so was the creation of The Hobbit into a movie a huge long shot just a few months ago. Who's to say it isn't possible? Yeah, I know all about Peter's other movies that he's directing, but like I said before, I'd much rather wait the extra few years if it meant PJ would direct it. I'm a very patient elf when it comes to my precioussss movies. ;D And it's interesting how the 2 movies will be. The first one centering on the actual book, then the second one being the link between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That makes it sound like they'll have to bring back some very well-known faces! Like ones that we don't expect to appear in The Hobbit but we know from Lord of the Rings. OOOoooO!! Exciting!!

eh, there's a few directors they've named that I think I'd like directing it. Of course he'd be amazing, but if it's impossible like he's saying it is, I'd still be fine......depending on who it is,lol
