WOO HOO!! Well, I'm going with the obvious, as I'm well known for... Gandalf: Ian McKellen Elrond: Hugo Weaving Bilbo: Ian Holm For the characters we have yet to meet on the big screen... Gloin: hmm My dream actor would be John Ryes Davies, but I know for certain that he'd never agree to come back as a dwarf a second time because of the awful allergic reaction he had to the prostetics. The various dwarves: I have no clue lol Thranduil: I am especially eager to see who is chosen to be the King of Mirkwood. I've only read part of The Hobbit, and I haven't reached the part with Thranduil, but of what I've heard about him he's a suspicious, greedy elf who thinks the dwarves are trying to steal all of his gold. I may be wrong, but I almost envision a type of "Denethor" personality. Nowhere as extreme, but something like that. I believe that most of the reason why the actors and actresses chosen for Lord of the Rings worked so well is because I had NEVER seen any of them before, except for Elijah Wood whose name I'd heard once or twice. I believe that new actors and actresses (most that have yet to have their break in Hollywood) would be most ideal for all the castings.

I'm actually not too sure if I want Ian for Bilbo. Like, scenes of him older, sure.....but it may too unrealistic due to his age. (In terms of his look, AND the action he'd have to do) As for Thranduil, I figure he has to be tall, obviously due to the fact he's an elf. I don't really know if he needs to look at all like Orlando, in fact that may be a negative, lol I'd imagine him strong, but not really to.....big, you know? The first British name that pops into my head under that description is Bill Nighy, here's some pics-- You may know him from Underworld, Notes on a Scandel.... or more popularly, Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean (So he's no stranger to CGI,lol)

OMG HE'S PERFECT!! The second and especially the third picture makes him look not only Elvish (the second pic with the design on his jacket, the 3rd pic for the icy blue eyes and long hair so common with Elves), but also lend him the attitude that a war-weary Elf like Thranduil would possess. Thranduil may not have all of Middle-earth's future on his shoulders, but we must also remember that he was never meant to be Mirkwood's ruler. Like Faramir who became next in line to be the Steward of Gondor after Denethor because of the death of Boromir, Thranduil came to the throne when his father, Oropher, was slain in battle. Elves, of course, live forever, so no doubt Thranduil hardly even gave a thought to the possibility that he might actually rule one day. With his father's death and possibilty his wife's (Tolkien never mentions what happens to her, although there is some speculation by people that the same terrible fate that Elrond's wife endured also happened to Thranduil's wife), he now had the responsibility of governing his father's lands, raising his son alone, and protecting his people from the gathering dark forces. Even after Sauron was destroyed, I have no doubt that there was still some evil dwelling in those woods. (I've done my homework for this royal family lol)
The only thing that I don't like about the pics is that I believe Thranduil needs to have a youthful look to him. He's immortal, so he'll never age. He can have the "wise" look to him like Hugo Weaving has for Elrond, but not too old looking. You know?

Yeahh, but between make-up, then digital stuff...plus those movies he was supposed to look older. (Evil un-dead vampire king, lol) He's not always that gruff looking. www.hitparade.ch/actorimages/bill_nighy.jpgObviously you can't ever fully escape a persons age, but I still think he'd work quite well. (Not even counting the makeup and shtuff)

Holy crap! What a change in appearance! Yeah, I guess with some make-up he would look so much more different. But as far as the age thing is concerned, after watching the X-MEN movies and seeing what they can do, I believe that they'd be able to completely convince the audience that the person is actually younger, even if they're so much older. Basically I think that they can do anything.

Yeah, sorry about that. That's how I thought you'd react. But Orlando Bloom aside, isn't the rest of that article slightly interesting?

Not quite sure if any of the actors (besides the obvious) have been mentioned as possible castings in the above posts, but I found this on TORN: www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/01/07/28227-speculation-on-hobbit-casting/Being as fond of the Elves as I am, I couldn't help scrolling to the bottom to see who they had in mind for Thranduil. Needless to say, I was shocked. They show the faces of 4 actors. One of them I've never heard of--Ralph Fiennes--and who might be a good choice. But the other three are simply too well known (at least for me) in order for me not to remember the person in other movie roles. Jason Isaac: This guy looked so familiar to me, then I remembered "The Patriot"!! He was a perfect villian in this movie, but I can't see him being an effective Elf. Sorry, I can't see it. Joaquin Phoenix: Even if you've lived in a hole the past 10 years, you've at least HEARD of this guy. He's been in so many movies that he'd be impossible to miss. The two that come to mind right away are "Ladder 49" and when he had a few appearances in one of the "Scary Movie" films. Out of the four, he's on my 2nd most-adamently-against choice. Johnny Depp: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY!!!!!!! Many people from my mom's generation know Johnny as the suave rebel, while this generation recognizes him as the pirate from "Pirates of the Caribbean". While he is an extremely talented actor who obviously can tackle ANYTHING, I believe that I would have a hard time not thinking of him as Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, or any of the many other parts he's played. To quote Elizabeth Swan: "Sorry, Jack...."

I agree with you on the adament NO for Joaquin and Depp. Jason Isaacs however, I could probably see as an elf. See? He can look somewhat like Legolas' father I think I like their idea of him voicing Smaug better, but yeah. Oh, and Ralph Fiennes is a greatttt actor, but I'm not sure if that's the best part for him. And a huge no to Colin Firth and Shia Lebouef as younger Bilbo
