I've heard many good things about this book, but I've also heard it's hard to get through. So my question to you is... Should I read it? (Honest opinion!)

Lol ;D Yes I definatly think you should read this book. It's Awesome! It's not an easy read though, and it can get very confusing in some parts. So you may have to go back and re-read some things. ( I also don't advise to stop reading it in the middle, then read another book, and then finally come back to that because most likley you'll forget everything [ <-- personal experience]). I'm sure we could have figured out what book you're talking about though, because this is the " Sillmarilion" Board, isn't it??

I just picked up a copy of it to read over summer break from college. I so want to start reading it now but that wouldn't be smart with finals coming up, lol. So the sooner finals week is over the sooner I can start reading it

I read it and the first time I skipped all the extra junk so I would understand it. Then I went back and read all that.

The Sil is a great and beautifully-written book that anyone who has read LotR should read at least once. But...I would never recommend reading the Sil unless the person had already completely read LotR, even though the Sil is the earlier history, because then there is a chance the reader could lose interest because it isn't the easiest book to read.

I think The Silmarillion is definitely worth reading. It gives you so much insight into Middle-earth, explains how it was created, explains the Valar, etc. I am very glad I am reading it.
I am not finding it too difficult to read at all. Just take it slow, write notes if you need to. I think it might be a good idea to make charts showing who is related to whom, which elves came from where, etc. There are some in the book and I know there are some on the Council of Elrond site.

Yes! You should definitely read the Silmarillion at least 5 times!
It's very hard to get through but a joy to read when you take each chapter slow and seperately. Completely different than the good drama/action story of LOTR's. You will find out how Arda was formed, who Luthien was, why Morgoth was evil, what a silmaril is, so much rich stuff.
I suggest the first time you read it to skip the first two chapters and come back to them later. The kinstrife is also hard to read. The Silmarillion is a history book. It can be very dry in some places but it will give you much understanding of why things happen in LOTR's and the Hobbit.
It's a reference book and anyone who wants to know about Tolkien's world should definitely have a copy and refer to it often. I wouldn't be without my copy.

LOL Don't let Elrond scare you from reading the book by saying that you should read it 5 times. But I know what he means. The book is very complex with SO MUCH INFORMATION. I sometimes think of it as the History of the World that should have been a 26 volume encyclopedia collection that's been packed into about 200 pages or so. LOL Uh oh, now I'M afraid that I might be scaring you. But seriously, The Silmarillion is a fantastic, beautiful book. I can see why Tolkien thought so highly of it and considered it one of his most important works. It truely is a masterpiece.
