The Silm is the history of Middle Earth, in order to grasp the full concept of any other book concerning M-E, you must read it. If there was a guideline, this would be the top resource. Of course, it's complex at times, but like Nienna said, don't let that scare you off. Also, I really love the first two chapters, which are about the Valar and Maiar...but that's because they are my two favorite cultures. Also, reading about the curse that lay upon the Noldor will give you some insight upon the suffering of Galadriel.

I do say, this is one of the hardest books to get started on!!! I personally have not read the whole thing but just the first few pages and it is very boring! I know its important and all, but it is very long and most of it is very boring.

I think it is one of The best books I'v ever read! But it is very hard reading, and it took me forever to finish it. If I were U I would read it, but just a little at a time.

lol You really should read it Larien. It's a great book, but it is a bit complicated at times. There's just so much to remember! You might want to consider taking notes or something so that you don't get confused. ~ Nienna

Oh wow...this thread is so old that you can see when I was still signing all my posts!! Yeah, I've had the Sil for at least 3 years (or is it 4? ) and I've only gotten halfway through it. Let me tell ya, if you don't know what you're in for, picture the hardest history book you've ever had to read x 100. Don't get me wrong...it's terrific reading and you can definitely tell that this was Tolkien's passion. It's very well done. But there are so many facts packed into each sentence that you kinda feel like you should be taking notes in order to remember everything!! In fact, that's what I did for a while. But then that's when I stopped reading because I thought it was silly to do that when I was also doing it for my classes. Of what I read (and remembered after 5 minutes ), I loved. I think what you need to understand is that in order to fully appreciate this book to the fullest, you have to be very serious about grasping it from the moment you sit down. You have to be dedicated. You also need a lot of time. I promise you that after reading it for 5 minutes, you will look at the clock and swear that an hour went by. But for all the "negatives", you get a few giant positives!! For the truely dedicated Tolkienite, you get the encyclopedia vastness of Middle-earth in a handy paperback, and it will tell you just about anything you've ever wanted to know about the elves. Of what I remember about the few times dwarves were mentioned, it didn't appear that the elves held them in high regard, but that wasn't always so, as the history will tell you. In the back of the book, you'll find a treasure trove of names, places, and objects unique to Middle-earth, their translations, and what they represented for the elves. I can't say enough for the skill of Tolkien. Even though I also have not braved this book for at least 3 summers, I still think that one day I'd be willing to give it a shot. ;D
