We've heard the rumors about "The Hobbit" being turned into a movie....but what about "The Sillmarilion"? I think it could be cool. (But then again I've never read the book.) What's your opinion?

as much as i enjoy the book it is nearly inpossible! for one thing; it covers such a long span of history in middle earth and valinor, that it would take at least 5 or 6 movies. for another; the many different caracters it would take, i dont think there are that many in hollywood! and lastly; the cost. the cost would be monumental! so my view is: i would love to see it happen, but it probably will not. but still the fact remains that it's only nearly impossible. so if any of you win the lottery..................... Hmm....i'd say no way, lol. Yes some scenes (taken from small book sections) would make great shorter movies, but it's just impossible, I think. Here's what it said in the offical lotr movie magazine: (to copy & paste from a CoE post of mine Lol ) "The Silmarillion, as far as I have been told-and I never know what is quite true and not-is not in a position to be made. Apparently, Christopher Tolkien has refused to discuss The Silmarillion film rights with anybody. He said that it will never be filmed, and he will never allow it to be filmed. So that's what I understand the status of The Silmarillion is. It would be a bit of a push to film that book anyway. Obviously, what you would have to do is just take little elements of it and develop it into films because you couldn't shoot the book as a sort of complete narrative piece. The Hobbit is obviously the more likely thing to take place because the film rights are out there. They're just a little complex. If New Line ever were to get The Hobbit rights freed up and they wanted us to do it, it would be something we would certainly consider. We're not in any way announcing to New Line or anybody else that we never want to do The Hobbit. It is just something that has never been discussed. But if that ever came about, it is not inconceivable that we would be involved in it" -Peter Jackson
Yuep, so it's probably impossible, though not for The Hobbit. Ai!! And hi Tulkas! (Tis ared ;D ) wait....you might not be the same Tulkas but ah well, hi anyway!

Suilad, once again. So all in all, Shadow, it is a possiblity of 1,000,000 to 1 that it will ever be filmed. and personally i am glad that it wont make to a movie because you can ruin alot of good books that way. o, and yes it is me! ( me aka Tulkas Thalion on CoE )

I agree with Manbechir and Aredhel. It would be way too hard to make a movie of the Silmarlillion. The stories don't have happy endings and they are pretty hard to understand if you go as in depth as it should be. Oh well... I hope that they make a movie of The Hobbit because the animated one tears the book up! It's horrible for anyone over age 6!!!

I am reading the Silmarillion. It is so beautiful. I absolutley love reading about how Middle-Earth came into being, the races, the Valar, etc. I'm not too far into it, but I plan to read the whole thing.
I don't think it should ever be made into a movie. It is too complex, too long, and too many characters. It also might ruin the mystique of the Silmarillion.
It would be cool to have a movie of it, but I don't think there ever will be.

The silmarillion would make a great base for 20 or more movies. Characters could be filled out and depth could be added to each story.
Imagine the story of Gondolin the hidden city and it's downfall, the growth destruction of Numenor, or the War of Wrath and the great dragons and balrogs! It would never fit into even 10 movies but there is much in the book to put on film, 20 or 30 movies would have plenty of material.

I'm only about half way through the book but already it is one of the most complicated books of any author that I have ever read. I wish I could remember who everyone is!! I'm going to have to read it again after this probably. But I don't think that I'll mind too much. ;D I've also thought of the possibility of them making a movie, but again, there are way too many obstacles in the way. The Hobbit should be good when/if it comes out. I'm sure that PJ will make Smaug look INCREDIBLE.

I'll have to agree with the general census...even if The Silm was made into a movie (or movies in this case) it would be impossible to produce the same effect that reading the book has. For one thing, if, say, we take the Fall of Gondolin and the Fall of Nargothrond (personally, my two favorites...for obvious reasons) what we have written about them is not enough to fill the span of an hour and a half to two hours. Now, if we were to take chapters, that would be too long, and would take two movies, at least. The only story that would really work would be the that of Beren and Lúthien...possibly even of Eärendil and Elwing. However, all of this also depends on the director...not all are as skilled as PJ, many focus far too much on technical graphics, some not enough. To put it bluntly, it would not work.
Though, I am very much looking forward to The Hobbit. ;D
By the way...I thought it was a different director filiming The Hobbit, and not PJ?

There was a rumor that I heard a few months ago that there was a guy by the name of Anderson that was going to direct the movie and that he was very much looking forward to making The Hobbit into a reality. Fortunetly, it turned out that this rumor was nothing more than an April Fool's joke. (Can you really imagine anyone else directing that film but PJ?? It ruined my day to think some alien movie director was going to film one of Tolkien's greatest books). As I've also heard, PJ wants very much to direct it, but New Line has to work a few things out with the film rights. New Line also said that they don't want PJ to EVEN THINK of working on The Hobbit until he's done with his other movie "King Kong". So I guess that if production does start, it won't be for at least 2 more years, perhaps more. I'm going to get gray hairs waiting for it!!

Hantalë i Valar (thank the Valar) !! Haha, I was so freaked about that, I think there should be an anonymous licesnse that only PJ is allowed to work on Tolkien's books. Now, I am very much so looking forward to The Hobbit on film.

I'm all for the lisense thing. Too bad they don't do something like that. There must have been some VERY angry people calling up New Line after they heard that rumor! I can't even imagine...
