I thought the first time i saw it that it should have ended when they all got on the boat. It should have had one long glorious shot of the havens and the boat slowly heading west. After I saw it again I thought the director has put so much of his own views into the film that if he wants it to end exactly like the book well whatever.
I thought it was a bit strange when Elrond travels all the way just to give Aragon Anduril, mainly as he was meant to received it in rivendll when they set out, and Elrond is meant to hard pressed to defend rivendell at that time. Also when he says Arwen is dyng. It just "adds" to the drama doesnt it.
I liked the way they ride into Gondor and you see the first glimpse of Minas Tirith, City of Kings. Thats just worth the price of admission to see how they visualised the city. I am a sucker for wide screen shots, because I also liked the shot of the undead swarming into Minas and overrunning the invaders. Its all CGI but it works.
Also liked the way the remnants of the army charge the black gate to distract Sauron. Hey when Gandalf and Aragon are leading you always have a bit of chance. No matter the odds. I thought Aragon's speech to the rohirrim was a little uninspiring but I guess you had to be there to get the effect. And Eowyns best scenes were when she had the helmet on. "Courage, Merry". Thats a great line.
Incidentally did ppl know that song Pippin sings in Gondor was a little tune written by the actor himself?
