Today I bought Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2, The Hobbit, and The Lost Road and other Writings. My question to all of you is which one of these is your favorite, and also, which one is worth reading first? I'm leaning toward The Hobbit since I'm almost done reading Return of the King (yes, I'm one of those people that saved it for last!) and I'm kinda curious how it all started. So share your thoughts everyone!

I would read the hobbit next. I have never read the lost tales 1 or 2 and i haven't read the lost road either but I own them, so I would read the hobbit.

Out of those 3 The Hobbit is probably my favourite, only well because I love hobbits!! ;D (lol, I am too biased.) About the other three, I would definitely read 'The book of Lost Tales Part One first, followed by Part Two, and then The Lost Road and Other Writings- only because that last one is I think fourth or fifth in the History of ME series. If you are done reading RotK, I would read the Hobbit before going on to the HoME series.

The Book of Lost Tales 1, The Book of Lost Tales 2, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-Earth, The Lost Road and other Writings.
that is the order of the series. and i would have to disagree with the others. since you have finished the LotR, i would read the Lost Tales series, followed by Unfinnished Tales. after that the next one i would read is The Silmarillion. the other books are really the first writings Tolkien ever did about middle earth and all, and then The Silmarillion alot of those books in a later form to make the history of it all. *then* i would read the hobbit. the Hobbit is really the link between the two series, and to read it all backwards can get confusing! the other books also have mostly dealings with elves since they where the first of the children of Illuvatar to wake up. if this sounds all too confusing ???in it's self, then you can jus follow their advice and read The Hobbit. ;D

Nah, I understand ya perfectly, Manbechir. Actually I've had so little time to read ANYTHING other than text books for school lately that I'm still not done reading RotK! Sad, isn't it? RotK has definetly been my favorite out of the trilogy and I can't wait to get to the others that Tolkien's written! ;D ~ Nienna
